Discover the true soul of Tangier on this unforgettable 4-hours-private-tour, perfectly planned for tourists on a short stay in Tangier or visiting the city during a cruise trip. Plunge with our local guide into the charming history and the lively culture of the Medina (the old town) and the Kasbah (the fortress), prepare your senses for an overwhelming experience in the frenetic souks and squares, and explore the city’s architectural heritage resulting from a harmonious blending of the Moorish and Western styles.
You can spend all your time in the Medina, experiencing what is listed above, if you choose option 1: The Old Town (Medina) Only. Or, you can go with option 2: Medina, Cap Spartel, and Camels; where the time is split between the Medina and an excursion to the breathtaking Atlantic coast of Tangier which itinerary includes the lighthouse of Cap Spartel, a camel ride (or just taking photos), and Hercules cave.
If you chose this option, you'll be picked up by car to get you closer to the Medina. The entire time of the tour will be spent within the historical walls of the old town. Likewise, when the tour ends, a car will be used to drop you off.
Tangier (ancient Tingis) was the capital of "Roman Morocco" or Mauritania Tingitana, and it’s at the same time the meeting point of a lot of different things: The Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, Africa and Europe, the Orient and the Occident, and the three Abrahamic religions. It is this unique blend among other features that have made Tangier the magical city we know today and that we would like you to explore with us during this private tour of 4 hours.
Upon meeting you, you will be welcomed by your tour guide having at your disposal a comfortable, Wi-Fi fitted air-conditioned, private vehicle for a ride that will take you first from Tangier’s bay, if the pick-up is from the port, up to the city center through Boulevard Mohamed V, Avenue Pasteur, and then Place De France. The ride will continue until you reach the main entrance of the Medina: Bab Fahss.
Once there, you’ll be immediately immersed in the historical heritage and the cultural prosperity of Tangier’s old town: the Medina. You will feel as if you have time-traveled back several centuries to a medieval time when the community still operates according to ancient norms and traditions. Hammams (public baths), communal ovens, fountains, squares, craftsmen, markets and cafes are all still working and remind us of a glorious era of Tangier.
The walking tour of the Medina will let you have direct contact with the friendly locals; and by strolling down the Medina’s labyrinthine alleyways, the tour will take you through the most important landmarks of the city such as the Grand Socco, the Petit Socco, and the Kasbah. You will also visit monuments that are considered architectural masterpieces decorated with mosaics, ornamental stucco, and wood carvings such as the Great Mosque, Dar El Mekhzen located in the Kasbah, and the American Legation, which is the only American national monument located outside of the United States, and the place of a large library specializing in North Africa, many paintings from Americans, Europeans, and Moroccans, and several small models recreating some historic battles. The real bonus here is the “Paul Bowles” wing, named for the American author who called Tangier home for 50 years and died here in 1999.
Upon request and if time allows, we can add to the itinerary Moïse Nahon synagogue, any Jewish cemetery in tangier, St. Andrew's Anglican Church, as well as any art gallery you would like to visit.
Just before the end of the tour, you will be left with some free time to scout for handcrafted souvenirs at bazaars (IF YOU WANT), or simply to sip on a mint tea in a traditional café and learn about mint tea rituals.
The drop-off after this tour will be wherever you like within Tangier area.
If you choose this option, with the help of our professional guide, you can set the time you want to spend in the old town (Medina) and choose the places you prefer to visit accordingly. The remaining time of the tour will be spent on the Atlantic coast excursion.
Chefchaouen was founded in the late 15th century as a Kasbah (fortress) to fight the Portuguese invasion of northern Morocco. Many local tribes, Moriscos as well as Jews settled there. Arriving Jewish exiles painted their houses blue to reflect their divinity — a tradition that continued over the centuries. It wasn’t until recently that the blue shades spread out of the Jewish quarter (the Mellah) to the other parts of the Medina (the old town) making it the "Blue Pearl" we know today.
Chaouen, as it’s called locally, has become one of the world’s top picturesque destinations. Its Medina is a real charmer! Prepare yourself to fall hard for its winding small alleys painted in every shade of blue you could imagine. If you are an Instagrammer, then you are in heaven! Your guide, as a local, knows all the hidden photo-spots. You are not going to miss any of them.
By strolling down the Medina’s labyrinthine alleyways, you will immediately absorb the Berber, Moorish, and Andalusian vibes. The itinerary comprises the most important landmarks of the city such as the Kasbah and its Museum, Hawta square, Ras El Maa, the Great Mosque, the bustling Outa El Hammam main square, and most of the arcs and Babs (gates).
If you happen to be in Chefchaouen on a Monday or a Thursday, that would be a big plus because they are market days, therefore, you’ll definitely be taken to visit the Souq. During these days the farmers of the neighboring Rif valley come down to the streets of the Medina to sell their products. These can vary from fruits and vegetables to handmade crafts and mountain herbs.
After a break for a delicious Chaouni lunch, your tour guide will escort you to the Spanish Mosque, or Boujaafar Mosque, to take in the wonderful view over Chefchaouen from an outside terrace and that will be the end of your tour of Chefchaouen.
And so, this will be the end of your 2 days trip in northern Morocco. After a 2h20min drive, the final drop-off will be wherever you like in Tangier.
